Provost's Communication - August 24, 2022

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well.

I wanted to take a moment to thank Dr. Enoch Hale and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) for putting on an incredible Professional Development Day on Friday, August 19, 2022, entitled: Advising Cal Poly Humboldt Students from an Asset—Based Mindset. Professional Development Day was well attended as we focused on how to begin eliminating advising holds to reduce registration barriers, and increasing access and advising capacity by adding nine additional academic advisors and connecting these advisors directly to colleges and departments. We also discussed implementing an advising tool to document advising notes and communications. More feedback and discussion on these topics are forthcoming in college and unit meetings so stay tuned.

New Academic Affairs Folx!

In addition to our new tenure track faculty that we are welcoming this academic year, there are a number of staff and administrators as well as faculty taking on new roles to support the success of our institution. I will be introducing you to a few folx in each communication. First I would like to highlight:

Cameron Alison Govier is serving as our new curriculum specialist. As you may have noticed we are moving forward with a huge amount of new curriculum at Cal Poly Humboldt. Cameron will be providing general support to faculty and staff in curriculum development processes and procedures and she will be available to answer questions and help with everything undergraduate and graduate curriculum. She will also be available to help with both internal and external processes including Curriculog.

Bella Gray will continue in her role as senior curriculum analyst and will have an increased responsibility as the university scheduler and start to implement more strategic scheduling at Cal Poly Humboldt with your collaboration and insights.

Dr. Amy Sprowles will be serving as the faculty associate dean for the academic year 2022-2023. Dr. Sprowles will specifically focus on the university-wide Place-Based Learning Communities (PBLC) build-out and graduate studies this fall. Dr. Cindy Moyer will also continue to serve as a faculty associate dean through fall 2022 to support broad curricular efforts.

Guidance for Addressing Executive Order 665- the CSU’s Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR)

Starting in Fall 2023, all undergraduate students must have a pathway to meet the GWAR for a timely graduation. The revised systemwide CSU policy requires “completion of at least one designated 3-unit upper-division writing course to satisfy GWAR.” In the April 26th, 2022 ICC meeting there were no objections to moving Cal Poly Humboldt forward with the four options described below to meet the GWAR. These options were also presented for feedback to the Council of Chairs for each college and University Senate in April and May of 2022. The two-step process below will ensure that programs (including GE) are in compliance for Fall 2023. Here is a suggested timeline for programs (including GE) to meet this requirement:

  1. September2, 2022 (or before):P rogramfacultydeterminehowtheprogram will meet the GWAR for 2023-24 academic year and email that decision to curriculum@humboldt.edu. (for example, UDGE, Capstone, other courses in major or program change to writing intensive program). This decision is flexible for future academic years (see: Four Options to Meet the GWAR).
  2. Early fall 2022 (or before): Coursechangesornewcourseproposalsare submitted in Curriculog and signed off by the Department Chair by September 12, 2022. Revisions to certify current UDGE classes will be prioritized.

The GEAR and ICC committees will work directly with programs to shepherd, review, and approve GWAR programs and GE or other course proposals to meet 2023 catalog deadlines once they have been submitted to Curriculog. In addition, Academic Programs staff is available to help with questions on course or program proposals in Curriculog.

Curriculum Deadlines

Finally, I wanted to make sure that you were aware of the forthcoming curriculum deadlines for this academic year. Some of these deadlines are forthcoming while some have also passed for the launch of programming in 2023. If a deadline has passed, please don’t despair and begin working on the curriculum for the following semester or academic year and the corresponding month pertaining to deadlines is fairly typical each year. Existing curriculum deadlines include:
2023-2024 Course Change Proposal Deadline for Courses that DO NOT require Changing Program Requirements

  • September 12, 2022. Deadline to submit, launch and approve proposals (proposals created, submitted/saved, launched and approved by the originator).
  • September 19, 2022 - Deadline for Department approval (proposals approved by the department chair.
  • October 3, 2022. Deadline for College approval (proposals approved by the college dean).

2023-2024 Program Proposal Deadline for New Concentration, New Minor, New Certificate, Program Change, and related New Course & Course Change proposals (deadline passed- please consider work for 2024-2025)

  • March 21, 2022: Deadline for Department approval (proposals approved by the department chair).
  • May 23, 2022: Deadline for College approval (proposals approved by the college dean).

If you have any questions, please contact curriculum@humboldt.edu.

Thank you for your contributions to Cal Poly Humboldt.
