Provost Communication, Monday, May 1, 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a great weekend and were able to get outside - even just a little bit. It’s hard to believe that Commencement is a week from Saturday. It’s a busy and equally exhausting time as we support getting our students over the finish line this semester. Thanks to each and every one of you for your efforts.

Well Done!

Congratulations to the following students Nick Salgado-Stanley, Chloe Bocox, Carmella Reed, Justin Valenzuela, Jade Holladay, Taylor Cloney, and Kimberly Poncio who are among the first cohort of students to be awarded the Peace Corps Prep Certificate at Cal Poly Humboldt which was originally launched in the Fall of 2021. Efforts like these continue to move us toward our goal of becoming a model global community at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Reminder: Join Us for the Second Annual ASSESSTIVUS!

Please join us for Cal Poly Humboldt’s second annual Assesstivus event at the Baywood Country Club on Wednesday, May 3rd from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. We will gather to celebrate assessment efforts aimed at measuring and improving the design and delivery of university programs and services, from student learning, to co-curricular experiential enrichment, to operational effectiveness and success. The university has made significant strides in assessment practices across campus, and this Assesstivus event will offer appreciation and commendation for the work behind those strides. Faculty and staff presentations will showcase noteworthy practices, and awards will honor accomplishments and service. All members of the Cal Poly Humboldt community are invited to join us, so we hope to see you there. Light refreshments and drinks provided.

Recordings and Feedback on Demonstrations of Advising/Student Engagement Software

Each of the three demos offered last week by vendors for Advising/Student Engagement software was recorded for anyone who couldn't make the sessions. Please see Advising Student Engagement Campus-Wide Demos for links to recordings, Q&A answers from vendors, and feedback forms. This document will be updated as EAB's Q&A responses become available. Please feel free to share this information with others within Cal Poly Humboldt. The feedback deadline is Thursday, May 4, 2023.

50th Anniversary Humboldt Journal of Social Relations Issue “Becoming a Polytechnic”

The Humboldt Journal of Social Relations (HJSR) celebrates 50 years of publication with the release of the 2023 issue “Becoming a Polytechnic.” Issue editors seeded multidisciplinary conversations that wrestle with pressing local and regional problems as the university embraces its new identity as the third polytechnic in the California State University system.

With contributions from 76 Humboldt faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members, the work sets the stage for creative, forward-thinking scholarly collaborations and educational visions that have been signatures of Cal Poly Humboldt. The articles include a range of topics including the arts, traditional ecological knowledge, literacy, wildfire management, energy, sea level rise, nursing and teacher education, and the history and future of cannabis. The issue is dedicated to Samuel P. Oliner, who in 1973 founded the journal. Oliner was a professor of sociology at Humboldt who published and spoke internationally on research on altruism inspired by his experiences as a Holocaust survivor.

Through generous support from the Humboldt Sponsored Programs Foundation, limited complimentary hard copies of the 2023 HJSR issue will be available for free at the journal reception at 2:45 pm on Friday, May 5, 2023, in room 317 of the Cal Poly Humboldt Library. The event is scheduled concurrently in the library with the 10th Annual IdeaFest, which showcases the research and creative work of more than 400 Cal Poly Humboldt students, faculty, and staff members. Digital access will be available soon at the HJSR website and you can also preview the 2023 issue cover and table of contents.

Have a great day.
