Provost Communication, Monday, October 2, 2023

Hello! I hope you had a nice weekend and I can’t believe it’s already October! I had a great time catching the Cal Poly Humboldt Soccer game yesterday defeating San Bernardino 3-1. What an exciting game. Hats off to all of our student-athletes and those that support their success.

As I mentioned a few weeks back I am forming a health task force to focus on the following:

Lead efforts to determine new academic degree programs in health to address workforce and polytechnic phase two (2026) goals.

Review existing academic degree programs in and related to health and collaborate with the departments to amplify pathways for students into degrees to launch into the workforce and/or graduate school.

Identify opportunities to improve access to healthcare in Humboldt County in partnership with the Redwood Coast Collaborative K-16 Grant and local community groups.

Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in participating. The health task force members have been identified and include:

Jill Anderson, Senate Representative (beginning Spring 2024)

Janelle Adsit, CAHSS Faculty Representative (beginning Spring 2024)

Kayla Begay, CAHSS Faculty Representative

Jenny Cappuccio, CNRS Faculty Representative

Eden Donahue, CPS Faculty Representative

Rose Francia, Staff Representative

Cameron Govier, Curriculum Representative/administrative support

Jamie Jensen, CPS Faculty Representative

Justus Ortega, Dean Representative

Call for Honorary Degree Nominations

CSU campuses have awarded honorary degrees to distinguished individuals who have demonstrated excellence in areas that benefit CSU campuses; the state, nation, and/or world; and/or humanity. Recipients serve as examples to be recognized and honored for their exemplary contributions. See the list of Honorary Degrees Presented by Cal Poly Humboldt.

As chair of the campus nominating committee for the awarding of honorary degrees, I invite your nominations for honorary degrees to be conferred either at the Spring 2024 Commencement Ceremonies or at another appropriate time. Nominations are due to the committee by Friday, October 27, 2023.

Nominations need to include: the full name of the nominee, two nomination letters, a brief summary of reasons the degree is deserved, a curriculum vitae or comparable biographical information, and a brief description of the relationship, if any, the nominee has with Cal Poly Humboldt. Please email nominations and supporting documents to the Provost’s Office using the following email address: OAAVP@humboldt.edu.

Credit for Prior Learning Policy Feedback Request

The Academic Policies Committee has completed an updated draft of the Cal Poly Humboldt Credit for Prior Learning policy. Feedback on the first draft was solicited in November 2022. Based on the feedback received, the committee has now completed a second draft for review.

This policy touches on a lot of areas that could impact programs, departments, and offices across campus. Credit for prior learning includes academic credit earned from (1) examinations (standardized and Cal Poly Humboldt faculty-developed); (2) learning, skills, and knowledge acquired through experience; (3) learning acquired outside formal higher education; and/or (4) education, training, and service provided by the Armed Forces of the United States (i.e. military credit).

Please consider reviewing and providing feedback using this form by Wednesday, October 18th. The committee also wishes to specifically solicit feedback on the highlighted portion of II. General Limitations that add a percentage limitation on credits used towards completion of majors. If you have any questions, please contact APC Chair, Nicole Jean Hill at njh27@humboldt.edu.

I hope you have a wonderful week.
