Provost Communication, Monday, October 23, 2023

Hello, and happy Monday. What a great weekend of Homecoming events. The Cal Poly Humboldt spirit was certainly in the air. I hope you all got an opportunity to get out and enjoy the activities.

Get Involved: American Indian College Motivation Day (AICMD): November 2, 2023

For 49 years, Cal Poly Humboldt has hosted American Indian College Motivation Day (AICMD). This event, which is held on the first Thursday in November, focuses on preparing high school students for what to look for and expect in college, creating a sense of belonging and cultural relevancy, and connecting students to their support team at Humboldt. AICMD is organized in partnership with the Council of American Indian Faculty and Staff, American Indian student leaders on campus, and the Office of Admissions. This is a great opportunity for departments to table and meet prospective students. More information on the event and how to sign up can be found here

URPC Budget Forum Slides and Recording

Thanks to the URPC committee members and administrative support for working hard on delivering an informative URPC Budget Forum this past Wednesday, October 18, 2023. The PowerPoint slides and materials can be here. Just go to the links listed under Budget Forum on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. Additionally, the forum was recorded and can be viewed here. The sound quality is good but the view of the slides isn’t perfect. To review it will work best to pull up the slides and watch the recording simultaneously.

Kieval Lecture

Dr. Edray Goins, Professor of Mathematics at Pomona College, will deliver the 80th Kieval

Lecture on Friday, October 27 from 7:00 – 8:00 PM in Science B 135. His lecture is titled Distance Makes the Math Grow Deeper: Rational Distance Sets, Nate Dean, and Me. Dr. Goins will discuss the beautiful results discovered by his students (2010 MSRI Undergraduate Program), who worked on questions revolving around finding points on conic sections at rational distances. The talk will also feature the personal relationships the speaker gained working with various African-American mathematicians on such questions. The presentation is dedicated to the life, works, and friendship of the late African-American mathematician Nate Dean (January 9, 1956 - February 18, 2021). It is geared to a general audience and all members of Cal Poly Humboldt and the community are welcome to attend.
