Provost Communication, Wednesday, August 23, 2023

Hello and happy Wednesday,

I hope your first week of the fall semester is off to a great start. It’s wonderful to chat with students on campus and feel their excitement about the year ahead.

A belated welcome to Dr. Enrique Guerrero, a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics this year, and Shay Heitzman, Lead Costume Technician in the Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre.

Great Job

A special shout out to The Learning Center which served over 2000 individual students last academic year which equates to about one-third of the campus population. I know they have robust goals to meet and exceed that impact this forthcoming year.

A Nod to Faculty and Student Leadership

We have some wonderful faculty leaders in important roles in academic affairs returning from last year who include:

  • Dr. Mateo Dean, International Faculty Fellow

  • Dr. Jennifer Ortega, Sustainability Faculty Fellow

  • Dr. Kaitlin Reed, Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) Faculty Fellow

  • Dr. Amy Sprowles, Faculty Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

Additionally, I would like to acknowledge Associated Students (AS) President Samuel Parker and Senate Chair and General Faculty President Dr. Jim Woglom for their forthcoming leadership.

Opportunity: Jefferson Science Fellowships

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is pleased to announce a call for applications for the 2024 Jefferson Science Fellowships (JSF). Established by the Secretary of State in 2003, these fellowships serve as an innovative model for engaging the American science, engineering, and medical communities in the U.S. foreign policy and international development process through a one-year immersive experience at the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Online applications will be accepted from August 1, 2023, through October 17, 2023, at 5:00 pm EST (2:00 pm PST).  To learn more and to apply, visit www.nas.edu/jsf.

Thanks and have a great rest of your week.

Jenn
