Provost's Communication - November 9, 2022

Hello everyone,

I am very appreciative of our Associated Students leadership and wanted to share some thoughtful comments from President Juan Gio Guerrero. He noted in a few different spaces yesterday that he wanted to follow up on a question [he] was asked during our Cabinet meeting. He said, the question posed to me was “What was the one thing campus leadership needed to hear about the student need?” After some thought the one thing to highlight is the times we are in. High inflation rates have increased the cost of living across the board. I can confidently say that students are feeling the financial pressures associated with the state of the economy like never before. Our financial standing is becoming increasingly prioritized out of necessity, diminishing the prioritization of other obligations. Because of this, the CSU is now in competition with major retail companies such as Starbucks, Target, and Walmart to recruit and retain young people. So as we continue in our respective areas to get students across the stage with a degree in hand, a part of the work will be to address the financial/basic needs of our students heading into our institution and revamping academia that is accommodating and emphasizes quality over quantity.

I know this announcement went out on the campus portal a week or two back but it’s so important I wanted to make sure you all had multiple times to see this great news! Dr.  Chrissy Holliday has been appointed Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Success at Cal Poly Humboldt. She begins her tenure on January 1, 2023. Dr. Holliday brings with her nearly two decades of higher education experience.
