Provost's Communication - October 5, 2022

Hello everyone,

I hope this fall day is treating you well.

Kudos and Give a Listen

North State Public Radio did a feature on our university on Blue Dot called: Marine Biology at Cal Poly Humboldt: plus, what's in a name (change?). Guests on the show included our own Dr. Rick Zechman, Director of Marine Operations, Marine Biology Professor Sean F. Craig, and student researcher Juhi LaFuente who talks about what it is actually like to study marine sciences at Cal Poly Humboldt. Give a listen here

Congrats to Laurie Richmond for joining California Sea Grant as an Extension Specialist

Dr. Richmond is taking on a new role in her work at Cal Poly Humboldt and will be officially joining California Sea Grant as an Extension Specialist. She will still be working as a professor in the Department of Environmental Science & Management at Cal Poly Humboldt, but will now be devoting a quarter of her time to working for Sea Grant. You can see the official announcement here.

Implementing Career Curriculum:  A Simple Process to Increase Equity and Engagement

The Center for Teaching and Learning is partnering with the Academic and Career Advising Center to host a workshop for faculty interested in integrating more career preparation into their courses on Thursday, October 6, 2022, from 12-1 pm in Library 317. Career Curriculum Integration (CCI) is a collection of assignments that help students master career readiness skills. Crafted by career advisors, faculty, and students, CCI is designed in a plug-and-play format, however, students benefit most when assignments are fully integrated into content courses. In this workshop, faculty will gain an understanding of how CCI acts as an equity tool to connect education with career pathways, learn how to access career curriculum, and build a plan for integrating a CCI assignment of their choosing into one of their courses. With career readiness a hallmark of a polytechnic education, now is the perfect time to increase engagement by helping students connect course content to their career aspirations.

Fall Commencement- Save the Date: Friday, December 16, 2022, at 3 pm

The commencement team is well into planning for Fall Commencement and I wanted to ensure that your calendars are marked and that you are planning to attend! Your attendance (faculty and staff alike) is very meaningful to our students so I ask that you prioritize commencement attendance. More information will come shortly regarding faculty regalia ordering. There is also the possibility that we may need to have two commencement ceremonies on Friday, December 16, 2022, depending on the number of students who register to graduate. The deadline for students to register is Wednesday, November 9th, 2022 so please look for information after this date to confirm if there will be one or two ceremonies.

Have a wonderful day.
